Fastidious otters and penguins are shaking their heads at attempts by their keepers in a Japanese aquarium to cheat them of cheaper meals due to rising costs.
Hakonen Aquarium, in an effort to cope with rising prices, has partially removed the traditional and expensive carp from its menu. Instead, they offer their animals mackerel.
Animals are not happy about these austerity measures. Some penguins turn their beaks in revolt when offered mackerel.
"Some take it in their mouths, but then spit it out," says aquarium director Hiroki Shimamoto, adding that the animals understand that something is not right.
The problem is even greater among aquarium otters who 'unanimously' reject cheap fish.
The aquarium has reduced the amount of sharun on the menu because the price of this prized fish has increased by 20 to 30 percent compared to last year, reports Hina.
The management still buys some of that fish for animal feed, but has no plans to fully return to it until it becomes cheaper.
