Koko, a two-year-old labrador, has been cured of alcohol addiction and is the first case in Great Britain, British media write.
Koko was brought to an animal shelter in Plimpton, Devon, with another dog after the death of their owner. The dogs needed emergency veterinary care because they were suffering from sudden seizures.
Staff at the rescue center claim that the dogs became addicted to alcohol because they had access to the drink, which was left by their owner, reports N1.
While the other dog later died, Koko was able to recover after undergoing alcohol withdrawal therapy. The dog was sedated for four weeks to avoid seizures.
"Weaning a dog off alcohol is something we are dealing with for the first time. Koko has been with us for over a month, since he arrived in intensive care. His story is tragic... Koko was in a serious condition and required 24-hour care. It became clear that he was suffering from symptoms that indicated alcohol dependence," Woodside Animal Rescue Trust posted on social media.
The rescue center stated that the dog is now out of danger, that it is no longer receiving medication and is starting to behave like a normal dog.
"The dog is not yet ready for adoption and although it seems that he has recovered physically, he is still mentally disturbed from time to time," the rescuers pointed out and expressed the hope that Koko will be adopted soon.
