Red tuna was sold today in Japan for almost 1,3 million euros, during the traditional New Year tuna auction in Tokyo.
The prestigious Michelin-starred sushi restaurant Onodera Group paid 207 million yen (about 1,28 million euros) for a 276-kilogram fish caught in Oma in the northern province of Aomori.
"It is believed that the first tuna brings good luck," restaurant director Shinđi Nagao told reporters after the auction.
"We want people to eat tuna and have a wonderful year," he added.
The record price for tuna at an auction in Japan was achieved in 2019. At the time, the fish was sold for 333,6 million yen (2,7 million euros at the time), and weighed 278 kilograms.
