Organizers of the British Summer Time festival in London's Hyde Park have announced an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing "bald wigs" during a Pitbull performance this summer.
The popular artist, also known by his nickname Mr Worldwide, will headline the Hyde Park Summer Concert Series on July 10th. His performance was announced back in October, when it was confirmed that Kesha would join him as a special guest, with new names expected to join the line-up soon.
And the idea to attempt to break the Guinness World Record on this occasion came after a viral trend that marked Pitbull's concerts over the past year. Fans, who call themselves 'The Bald E's', show up to the shows wearing bald wigs, rubber caps that cover their hair, aviator sunglasses and leather jackets, imitating their idol's recognizable look.
The idea of breaking the record was first publicly put forward by BBC radio host Greg James, and Pitbull soon responded with a message of support, expressing his desire to participate in this attempt.
"Guinness World Records, get ready for all the 'Bald-E's' that will set Hyde Park on fire on July 10th," Pitbull said in a statement.
"Every time you put on a bald wig, you know you're in for the party of a lifetime. Thank you for your love, dedication and support," he added.
According to Guinness World Records rules, all participants must wear 'bald wigs' securely attached to their heads, with their hair tucked under the front and top (hair is allowed to fall in the back). They must also all be gathered in the same place and remain in formation for at least one minute for the record to be recognized.
Darcy Jackson from AEG Presents European Festivals, which is organizing the festival, said the organization is excited about the endeavor:
"We've already broken a few world records, but this is truly going to be the party of a lifetime. We can't wait to welcome the crowd to Hyde Park. Come all - and come bald!"
Will Manford, a Guinness World Records judge, said he was looking forward to attending this attempt, noting that it was a great opportunity for fans to come together and celebrate their favorite artist.
One of the biggest “bald” gatherings was seen last year during a sold-out concert at London’s The O2, when footage of the crowd quickly went viral. The performances were part of his European “Party After Dark” tour, which he was joined by Lil Jon.
On stage, he then gave a special thank you to the audience who came in masks.
“It’s amazing to see and feel it,” Pitbull commented.
