A source close to Mick Jagger has denied claims that the legendary musician gave personal permission to the producers of the documentary "Melania" to use the song "Gimme Shelter."
The film's producer, Mark Beckman, told Variety earlier this week that the Rolling Stones frontman "was involved" and "gave his blessing" for the song's use. He noted that, unlike the Stones, artists such as Guns N' Roses, Grace Jones, and Prince's copyright owners refused to allow their music to be used in the film. Among those who requested that their music be removed from the documentary was Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood.
However, according to The Guardian, a source close to Jagger said that one should be skeptical of the producer's claims, assessing that they were made in the context of promoting the documentary.
A spokesperson for The Rolling Stones also told the same newspaper that the band did not negotiate directly with Beckman about using the song in the film. The deal, it is said, was reached between the producers and ABKCO, which owns the rights to the band's material recorded before 1971.
The documentary follows First Lady Melania Trump during the 20 days leading up to the inauguration of President Donald Trump in January 2025. The film begins with the musical score of the song “Gimme Shelter.”
Beckman claimed that the collaboration with the Stones "wasn't a political thing," but that the band thought it was a "good movie."
"We worked very closely with them on this. It's not about politics - this is the story of a woman who re-enters the White House from civilian life," the producer said, adding that the band members were reportedly impressed with the material they saw.
