The Met Gala is one of the most exclusive fashion events in the world, but behind the glamour of the red carpet and spectacular gowns lies a series of strict rules that, in their rigor, could rival royal protocols.
From the ban on the use of mobile phones to the carefully selected menu, everything is subordinate to one person - Anna Wintour, who has been dictating the rhythm of the evening at the New York Metropolitan for years.
The theme of this year's edition, which takes place on the first Monday in May, is "Costume Art", but the event is accompanied by some controversy.
The decision to include Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez as honorary co-chairs has sparked backlash from some, with calls for a boycott even emerging. However, despite everything, the event is expected to bring together the biggest names in fashion, film and music, with the usual dose of tightly controlled luxury.
One of the most famous rules of the Met Gala is a complete ban on the use of phones during the evening. Although in the past, some selfies from the restroom have gone viral, such as the one posted by Kendall Jenner, the organizers still insist on preserving the atmosphere, without posting on social networks. Guests are completely left to themselves after entering the museum, without the escort of PR teams and assistants, while the staff discreetly ensures that the rules are followed.
The gastronomic part of the evening is not left to chance either. The menu is planned months in advance, but under very clear restrictions. Onions, garlic and chives are banned due to their smell, and foods that crumble or easily create a mess are avoided, in order to protect the couture creations worth several hundred thousand dollars.
Even seemingly innocuous details like parsley are removed to avoid embarrassing situations in front of the cameras.
Although tickets to the Met Gala are among the most expensive in the world for such events, money does not guarantee comfort or the company you desire. Seating arrangements are carefully planned in advance and rarely change, and it is known that partners and friends are often deliberately separated. The idea of the organizers is to create unexpected encounters and conversations, so people who have never met before but share a similar professional world often find themselves at the same table.
It is this combination of strict control and spectacular glamour that makes the Met Gala an event that is talked about months in advance and which, despite everything, still remains a closed world unto itself.
