Charlie XCX: The journey from musician to actor is "cringe"

Musician Charli XCX has reflected on her transition into the world of film, admitting that the journey from musician to actor can be perceived by many as "cringe" (unpleasant or uncomfortable).

The "Brat" album author plays the lead role in the new drama "Erupcja," which follows a woman trapped in Warsaw with her boyfriend due to a volcanic eruption, while simultaneously reconnecting with a person from her past.

This is her first leading role in a classic feature film. She previously played a fictionalized version of herself in the mockumentary project "The Moment" and a supporting role in the fantasy drama "100 Nights Of Hero."

Now the singer has explained why she took a less dominant position on the set.

"Especially in my situation, as a musician who wants to act, it's inherently 'cringe.' Everything is a bit cringe and I'm fully aware of that. Also, I'm very new to this and I wanted to take a step back, learn and only make suggestions when I really felt they were important or could contribute to the conversation in a meaningful way," she pointed out.

The film "Eruption" was created through a very collaborative process, and Charli emphasized that she particularly enjoyed writing the script together during the production itself.

"We got together, wrote every day, and then immediately recorded what we wrote. It was an incredibly intense and completely immersive experience," she said.

"In a way, it was reminiscent of theater. Everything was very spontaneous and inspiring. I hope this film will encourage people who are already making films to think about this way of working, as well as future authors to pick up a camera and create together with their friends," the musician described.

The transition from music to acting isn't always easy for artists. While stars like Jennifer Hudson, Will Smith, and David Bowie have successfully combined both careers, legends like Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, and Mick Jagger haven't had the same success on the big screen as they have on the music charts.

"Eruption" hits theaters this Friday, June 5. After that, Charli XCX will appear in the comedy "I Want Your Sex" alongside Olivia Wilde, as well as the crime thriller "The Gallerist" with Natalie Portman.

When it comes to music, she recently announced her new album "Music, Fashion, Film" and talked about how she brought together three legendary figures from the worlds of music, fashion, and film for the cover of the project.
