Hearing loss has not only deprived Hugh Lewis of the ability to perform, but also of enjoying what he has dedicated his entire life to. The legendary American singer admitted that the inability to listen to music has been the hardest thing for him.
The 76-year-old Grammy winner spoke about living with Meniere's disease on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast "Inside of You." It's a rare inner ear condition that causes severe dizziness, ringing in the ears, and gradual hearing loss.
"The truth is that I can't hear music anymore," said Luis, adding that this was the biggest blow to him.
He was diagnosed with the disease in the mid-1990s, but it was not until 2021 that he spoke publicly about his health condition.
He has not been able to hear normally for over eight years, and although the implant and hearing aid allow him to understand speech, they also change the pitch of the tones, which is why he can no longer experience music in the way he is used to.
The frontman of the band "Huey Lewis and the News" says he is trying to accept the fact that music has practically disappeared from his life, but he admits that it is not easy, especially when he sees friends and colleagues who are still performing and enjoying themselves on stage.
Due to hearing loss, Luis is no longer able to go on tours, so today he spends a lot of time in nature and fishing.
"The upside is that if I could still hear, I'd probably still be on tour and playing between 75 and 100 shows a year. I don't miss that. I miss hanging out with the guys in the band and that circus lifestyle that comes with touring," said Lewis.
