Sam Smith stopped taking photos with fans a few years ago.
In an interview with "The Guardian", the singer revealed that he made the decision to protect his privacy, but that it was very difficult for him at first.
"I felt depressed because I felt like I was disappointing people all day," Smith said.
However, with the help of therapy, he began to view encounters with the audience differently.
"I actually started to find happiness and joy in meeting people. I am a healthy person now and I can handle more things," he said.
Smith explained that the fame he faced at a very young age, as well as publicly confronting his own identity and changing pronouns, posed a great burden for years.
"Fame came into my life very early, and at the same time I was trying to find my place as a gay person. Everything I went through in my twenties, in the public eye, was a big burden and because of that I had much less capacity to deal with other things," he explained.
