Five Grammys for Billie Eilish at the ceremony in "the house that Kobe built"

Young pop star Billie Eilish was the big winner at the 62nd Grammy Awards, which ended early this morning - she won five awards, including awards in four major categories.

The ceremony held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, home of the LA Lakers, was dedicated to NBA and Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who died that day in a helicopter crash.

Eighteen-year-old Eilish triumphed in all the "big four" categories - song of the year, record of the year, album of the year and best young artist. She is the youngest artist to do so since the awards began, and the first since Christopher Cross in 1981.

She won the Grammy for album of the year for her debut album, "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go," which was recorded at her family home in Los Angeles, reports the BBC.

"I never imagined this would happen to me. I grew up watching all of you," she said as she took the stage to accept the first award of the night.

Her older brother Phineas O'Connell also won Producer of the Year for his work on her album. He said they recorded the album at home because he is most creative where he is most comfortable.

Other big winners of the night included Lil Nas X who won Video of the Year for "Old Town Road" and rapper Lizo, who won three Grammys including Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit "Truth Hurts."

A heavy favorite with eight nominations, Lizo also won for Best R&B Performance for "Jerome" and Best Urban Contemporary Album for "Cuz I Love You."

Lizo opened the ceremony and with host Alicia Keys paid tribute to basketball star Kobe Bryant who died earlier that day in California.

"Tonight is for Kobe," Lizo announced as the ceremony began before singing "I'm crying 'cos I love you."

After her performance, Alicia Keys came on stage and invited the audience to think of Bryant's family.

"Today Los Angeles, America and the whole world lost a hero," Keys said before singing "It's so Hard to Say Goodye" accompanied by soul group Boys II Men.

Several other performers paid tribute to the fallen basketball legend during the ceremony.

Forty-one-year-old Bryant died yesterday in a helicopter crash with his thirteen-year-old daughter and seven other people. Alicia Keys said everyone is feeling sad right now.

The dominance of Billie Eilish and, to a lesser extent, Lizo at the 2020 Grammys shows the attention given to new musical tendencies and toying with traditional categories. It will also appease critics who have felt that the Grammy Awards have favored male and white artists in recent years.

In addition to the tribute to Kobe Bryant, two music stars - Prince and rapper Nipsey Hustle - were honored at last night's ceremony.
