American musician John Baptiste and Canadian singer Justin Bieber lead the number of nominations for the Grammy Music Awards, which are awarded by the American music industry, it was announced today.
With 11 nominations, the 35-year-old African-American whose nominations span multiple genres from R&B, jazz, American roots music to classical and music videos is far ahead of the 27-year-old Canadian pop star who has eight nominations.
Batist was nominated for album of the year for "We Are" as well as for song of the year with the track "Freedom", which is a kind of ode to the city of New Orleans.
Singers Doge Kat and Gabriela Wilson, known by the stage name HER, also have eight nominations each, and Billie Eilish seven.
Olivia Rodrigo, an 18-year-old American singer and actress, also has seven nominations.
The names of the winners will be announced on January 31, 2022 in Los Angeles at the 64th Grammy Awards ceremony, which will be broadcast by CBS television, one of the five major national television networks in the USA, and certainly also over the Internet.
Harvey Mason Jr., president of the Recording Academy, said in a statement that the nominations reflect "the beauty of today's diverse and diversified music landscape."
In response to constant criticism of the lack of diversity in the nominations, two categories have been added to the previous eight categories.
