British pop singer Dua Lipa has admitted she felt hurt and humiliated when her wooden performance at the 2018 Brits was turned into a mime. The performance was published on the YouTube service, and the singer was widely mocked in the comments. She said that she had only recently overcome the feeling of humiliation.
"People took a clip of that video of me dancing and turned it into a mime, and when I won the Grammy for Best New Artist, a lot of people said I didn't deserve the award. It was painful. It was humiliating. I had to get off Twitter. The things that made me happiest - performing and writing songs - also made me anxious, because people were tearing apart everything I was working on. I had to learn to deal with that in front of everyone me as an artist, as a performer. It all happened when I was 22, 23 years old and growing up. You have to have a tough skin, you have to be resilient," Dua Lipa told "Guardian".
When asked how long she felt humiliated, the singer replied that it lasted until she finished writing the album "Future Nostalgia" and performed for the first time with the song "Don't Start Now" at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
"It lasted, I don't know, two years. It was never like I couldn't get out of bed because of what people thought of me. It didn't affect me that much. But that's when the feeling was the strongest for me. Then when ' Don't Start Now' came out in November 2019, I realized that I will finally be able to dance in front of people after so long they thought I couldn't. I did that performance and everyone realized that they were wrong. I enjoy it ", pointed out the singer. Many praise her for the effort she has put in over the years to improve her dancing, but Dua Lipa says the criticism was not justified.
"I don't think it was fair, because people saw a part of a much bigger performance. I think those who saw me live during the tour where I promoted the first album must have thought differently," said the singer.
When asked if the criticisms had a positive side, because they forced her to improve her performances, she answers in the affirmative, but adds that it would have been the same without them.
"I always planned to work on being a good performer. I wouldn't miss working on it, no matter what happened," said Dua Lipa.
