The names of the artists who will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year have been announced, but many fans are expressing dissatisfaction with the omission of some big names.
Among the artists recognized by the panel this year are: Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Soundgarden and the White Stripes.
In addition to them, the Musical Influence Award will be presented to Salt and Pepper, as well as the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon, who passed away in 2003.
This year's winners are further rounded out by Tom Bell, Nicky Hopkins and Carol Kaye, who will be honored with the Musical Excellence Awards, while Lenny Varonker, former president of Warner Bros Records, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
While the achievements of this year's winners are undeniable, there is growing frustration among fans that many long-standing bands and performers continue to be overlooked.
The band that garnered the most attention this year was Oasis, a band that just announced one of the most anticipated world tours ever, after reuniting after a 16-year hiatus.
Oasis were included on the expanded list of Hall of Fame candidates, but failed to secure a spot. They were also ignored on the 2024 list.
After the announcement of his entry into the wider list in February, Liam Gallagher repeatedly expressed his dissatisfaction on the X network.
He later jokingly told a fan that, if he won, he would "of course go and say it's the best thing EVER."
In addition, the band Fish, who won the fan vote, was ultimately ignored in favor of other artists.
Mariah Carey, Billy Idol and Joy Division also did not make it into this year's class.
Fans on the X platform expressed disappointment over the omission of major bands that have had a huge influence on music for decades.
One user wrote:
"It's all clear to you when Outkast gets into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and New Order and Oasis don't."
Others added:
"While Outkast deserves recognition, so does Oasis."
Someone quoted Liam's earlier statement and joked:
"This is how I feel after Oasis didn't get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame."
Another comment read:
"Typical, right? Outkast are great, but Oasis practically invented Britpop – a huge missed opportunity."
Another fan noted:
"Unfortunately, Americans often underestimate Oasis."
This year's awards ceremony will take place on November 8, 2025, and will be available to watch on the Disney+ platform.
Following the announcement, Cyndi Lauper, who was also part of the fan vote that Fish won, thanked her longtime fans and the women who paved the way for women in rock music.
"I'm honored to be in the company of so many of my heroines – Aretha (Franklin), Tina (Turner), Chuck (Khan), Joni (Mitchell), Wanda (Jackson), to name a few."
