Montenegrin rapper Vesko Savović aka Skoveche confirms what he is known for in his new song “6:0” - raw, direct expression without hesitation. Although it was originally planned as a tribute to the anniversary of the British rapper's death, the song took on a broader context and was released on the compilation “Domća rabota 2”.
It was inspired by the game "Decks", and Skoveche talks about it all for "Vijesti"...
The audience is used to you dealing with everyday topics in a humorous way. However, through the song that was on the compilation “Domestic Work 2” - “6:0 disk”, several themes are woven. Now, on the EP “Mali korak za Skovečeta veliki za skovečanstvo” which was released this year, there are five songs, does this complete that story and is that why it is a 6:0 disk?
This song actually has a bit of a strange background, I had a completely different idea that ended up not being feasible, and then this track ended up on the compilation. It was actually planned to mark the five-year anniversary of the death of British rapper MF DOOM on October 31st, as a tribute, so the entire lyrics were written on the “Fazers” instrumental. Because of that, the song doesn’t stick to any specific theme, but is simply a lyrical demonstration, or rather one verse of 48 raw verses.
Thanks to rapper Skrilla, the phrase “6/7” has become popular worldwide. Do you think 6:0 could be the new trendy phrase among young people?
The name of the song came spontaneously and at the very end of the whole process, and it refers to a popular game behind the building that all my peers played at least once, which is “Docks”. A combination of football and tennis that today has even developed into a sport better known as “Teqball”. The game was played to 11 points, and if one player won the first six points in a row, it would be an automatic win, or in street slang “6:0 disc”.
It is known that there is always vanity among musicians. In your song, you say “I paint rappers like a mother at a table” and “Skoveče is always number 1 like a goalkeeper”. Considering that, as I said, you always deal with topics in a humorous way, how much truth is there in this joke and is there vanity among rappers? How did your colleagues react to these lyrics?
There is definitely vanity, because of course my song is not the only one on the compilation of this nature. I am very competitive, but for me it is all just a healthy sport, as the UFC says. There is no ill will towards anyone. At the end of the day, everyone thinks they are the best and that is the only mentality that is correct in my opinion, but for the fact to be true, it must first be proven. Lyrics like these can be heard on all my releases in songs like “Outro” from the debut album, “Skove2Run” from the Deluxe version, and especially on the collaboration album “Na dvije stolice” with colleague Ronald Maximum.
As I already said, this year also brought the EP “A Small Step for Skovecheta, a Big Step for Skovechana” with five songs, and in the new single you yourself say “I released the album and immediately they raised my throne, everyone is counting on me like I'm a calculator”. How much has this project changed the audience's perception of Skovecheta and rap in general?
I think it's still early to reap the rewards, but in addition to the domestic audience, it is slowly starting to spread regionally, which is one of the goals we all agree on. Projects like this don't happen that often, and we were lucky to see two of them in just a few years.
In one verse you mention “I make hits on the fly.” How do you experience that moment of inspiration and rapid creation in today's music, where songs sometimes come into being and become hits in a matter of hours, but are just as quickly forgotten?
Yes, unfortunately we are all aware that today only short formats reach a wider audience, but that aside, I have to praise the collecting that has recently made a big comeback. Especially in the rap genre, in the last 10 years we have witnessed dozens of vinyls that have been sold or valued at several thousand euros. Of course, there are also those that are accessible to everyone, and I am glad to be part of that community.
The song ends with the line “google me,” which is a classic way for the audience to research an artist. Given that younger generations are using Google less and less, and are increasingly asking ChatGPT or similar tools, how important do you think it is today to “be recognizable” on such AI platforms?
Actually, “Google me” is another slogan I added to my now-famous slogan from before, and it has an ambiguous meaning. One is exactly that, Google me if you don't know who Skoveche is, and the other meaning refers to the terminology and allegories I use in my lyrics. Lyrics like “I carry water and sugar, prison napalm” or “I almost became Vučinić, signed for Juventas” are almost impossible to understand without Googling.
