Spanish prosecutors are considering charges against singer Julio Iglesias that he sexually assaulted two former employees at his homes in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.
The Spanish prosecutor's office told the AP today that the allegations are related to media reports published earlier this week that Iglesias sexually and physically assaulted two women who worked at his residences in the Caribbean between January and October 2021.
Iglesias has not yet officially commented on the allegations. Russell King, a Miami-based attorney who lists Iglesias among his clients on his website, did not immediately respond to an AP request for comment.
The Spanish prosecutor's office, which handles cases for Spain's National Court, said it received formal allegations against Iglesias from an unnamed party on January 5.
Iglesias could be tried before a court based in Madrid, which can try crimes committed by Spanish citizens while abroad, the court's press service said.
The Spanish online newspaper elDiario.es, and the Spanish-language television station Univision Noticias published a joint investigation into Iglesias' alleged transgressions.
Iglesias (82) is one of the most successful musicians, having sold more than 300 million records, recorded in more than a dozen languages. After starting out in Spain, he gained immense popularity in the US and around the world in the 1970s and 1980s. He is also the father of pop singer Enrique Iglesias.
