Music platform Bandcamp has officially banned music created with the help of AI (artificial intelligence) on their site.
On behalf of Bandcamp, a statement was issued through the media and social networks two days ago, explaining that the reason for adopting this rule was to respect "the enormous amount of human creativity and passion that artists express every day on Bandcamp."
“It is home to such a vibrant community of real people who create incredible music and turn it into something we want to protect and preserve,” the statement added.
For these reasons, Bandcamp executives were forced to ban the posting of music on their site that was created with the help of AI, claiming that music itself and audio sounds that were generated with the help of artificial intelligence - in whole or in part, are not welcome on Bandcamp.
It also points out that any use of AI tools to imitate another artist or style is “strictly prohibited in accordance with their existing rules regarding copying or infringement of intellectual property rights.”
"If you come across music on our site that can be said to have been created in part or in whole by relying on AI, please report it to our team who will investigate the allegations. We reserve the right to remove any music suspected of being AI-generated," Bandcamp said.
The use of artificial intelligence to create songs has been causing controversy in the music world for some time, and in July last year, the streaming platform Deezer shared the fact that as much as 28 percent of the music available on their platform was created entirely with the help of AI.
Last month, singer George Smith's record company found a song in which the author recreated her voice with the help of artificial intelligence.
"We cannot allow this to become normal," they said at the time.
Meanwhile, the "Spotify Unwrapper" campaign has been launched, calling on users to boycott this streaming platform due to the large amount of music created with the help of artificial intelligence.
Shortly before that, the music group “King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard” complained to fans that they had encountered “their AI replacement” on the Spotify platform, that is, music created by artificial intelligence that copies them. For this reason, they decided to withdraw all their music from the aforementioned streaming platform.
Bandcamp is a platform where musicians from Montenegro often upload their music. It is an American online music distribution platform founded in 2008 by Ethan Diamond, Sean Grunberg, Joe Holt, and Neil Tucker.
Bandcamp allows artists or their labels to control the purchase of their music by setting their own prices. In return, the company takes 15 percent of the profits from sales through the site.
