British singer and songwriter Rae has been compared to Amy Winehouse since the beginning of her career.
The pop star opened up about the topic in a new interview with “Elle” magazine, recalling how her signature blend of jazz, soul and hip-hop has led to her often being compared to other artists.
She emphasized that she never wanted to imitate Winehouse.
"I am aware that what she did is irreplaceable and unrepeatable, and that is simply the case. Amy did it so well that no one can ever do what she did. May God grant her eternal peace, she gave her entire life so that we can enjoy the music she left behind today," Ray believes.
Speaking further about the hurtful comments that lump them together, Ray admitted that she doesn't like them.
"What's hard for me is when people are so awful, rude, malicious and mean in their words: 'You'll never be her. You're a complete failure. I'm disgusted that you even think you could even remotely resemble her.' And what's ironic about all of this is that that way of speaking is exactly the same evil that Amy faced. I'm not claiming to have gone through a hundredth of what that girl went through, but it comes from a similar place," the singer added. MV
