Bad Bunny transformed Levi's Stadium into a vibrant tribute to Puerto Rico during his Super Bowl halftime show, staging an energetic ride through the island's culture, featuring a surprise appearance by Lady Gaga and a tribute to reggaeton pioneer Daddy Yankee.
The halftime show marked a historic moment for Latin music on America's biggest stage. Coming a year after Kendrick Lamar's record-breaking performance, which drew more than 130 million viewers, Bad Bunny used the platform to celebrate his roots and further cement reggaeton's place in mainstream American culture, Reuters reports.
The choice of Bad Bunny, whose full name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, to perform at halftime has drawn criticism from President Donald Trump and other conservatives, due to the singer's outspoken criticism of US immigration policies.
Trump took to social media to say that the Super Bowl halftime show, headlined by the singer, was "absolutely terrible."
Dressed in a white suit, the 31-year-old superstar opened the performance with the song "Tití Me Preguntó," moving through carefully crafted vignettes of Puerto Rican life - farmers in traditional pava hats, domino players and boxer(s).
The performance got into full swing on a side stage called "La Casita" (the little house), where he performed "Yo Perreo Sola," "Safaera," and "Party," while celebrities including Pedro Pascal, Karol G, Cardi B, and Jessica Alba were seen dancing in the audience.
In one of the most theatrical moments, Bad Bunny, performing "Voy a Llevarte Pa' PR", "broke" through the ceiling of "La Casite", and then moved to a white truck, where dancers danced to a medley dedicated to the roots of reggaeton - "Gasolina" by Daddy Yankee, "Dale Don Dale" by Don Omar and his own hit "EoO".
"If I'm here at Super Bowl 60, it's because I never stopped believing in myself," he said, as the violins overflowed into "Monaco."
The staged wedding, featuring the iconic La Rana Concho, was shown on screens throughout the stadium, leading to a surprise entrance by Lady Gaga. The pop star sang a salsa version of "Die With A Smile" and then danced with him to "BAILE INoLVIDABLE."
He then moved on to "NUEVAYol," as screens showed a child and his family watching the Grammy Awards, where he won Album of the Year - the first time that award had been given to a Spanish-language album.
Ricky Martin appeared for "LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii," after which Bad Bunny raised the Puerto Rican flag and performed "El Apagón." The stadium exploded with light, before he sang "CAFé CON RON" and shouted "God bless America!", listing all the countries on the continent as he paraded a series of flags.
The stadium then read: "The only thing more powerful than hate is love," and he addressed the audience, closing the performance with the song "DtMF," the title track from his Grammy-winning album "Debí Tirar Más Fotos."
The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29:13.
