The Red Hot Chili Peppers have made one of the biggest music deals in recent years by selling the rights to their recordings to Warner Music Group for more than $300 million. The deal was completed through a joint investment fund between Warner and Bain Capital, worth a total of $1,2 billion.
The sale includes the band's entire studio catalog, including the albums "Blood Sugar Sex Magik," "Californication," "By The Way," and "Stadium Arcadium," which continue to generate huge profits thanks to streaming and long-standing popularity.
The band's catalog is estimated to generate an annual revenue of around $26 million, mostly from releases released on Warner Records. The steady earnings and long-term value of hits like "Under The Bridge," "Scar Tissue," "Can't Stop," "Otherside," and "Californication" have made their music catalogs one of the most sought-after investments in the entertainment industry.
This isn't the first big deal the band members have made regarding their rights. Back in 2021, they sold their publishing rights to Hipgnosis, now known as Recognition Music Group, for around $140 million.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 120 million records throughout their career and hold the record for the most number-one songs on the US Alternative Songs chart - a total of 15.
In a financial report released on May 7, Warner stated that through its partnership with Bain Capital, it has so far spent about $650 million on acquiring music catalogs, meaning the Peppers deal accounts for almost half of the total investment.
The music catalog market has seen huge numbers in recent years. In 2024, Queen sold its catalog to Sony Music Group for $1,27 billion, while the band KISS sold its catalog, band name, and visual rights to Pophouse Entertainment for around $300 million in the same year.
With this move, Warner Music Group secured one of the most important rock catalogs of the 1990s, while the band paid in advance for the value of the music that would generate income through royalties for decades to come.
