Montenegrin band "Rudolf" presented a new, remastered video for the song "Olupina" during Independence Day, and the members of this band, Bojan Peko Minić (solo guitar/vocals), Nenad Lalović (rhythm guitar), Nikola Dulović (bass guitar), Luka Božović (drums), Teodora Marinković (saxophone, keyboards) and Aleksa Šćepanović (bass), announced to the audience through social media that work on the new album had been completed.
"Did you miss us as much as we did you? While we wait for the completion of work on the third album, we were busy on other plans and, produced by RTCG, recorded a video for the remastered version of the song "Wreck", which will soon be accompanied by a documentary show," they wrote on the social network Facebook.
As they joked, thanks to the video, the audience can see "whether the exercises he tries to do in the video were worth it for Peko or whether the spaghetti still prevailed. If the goat lies, the horn, or in this case the stomach, does not lie."
In an interview with "Vijesti", Minić revealed why "Olupina" received a remastered version of the video, how important it is to them that the video premiered in their hometown of Kolašin, during the celebration of Independence Day, but also how work on the new album is progressing and when it will be released.
"We filmed the video in December and by God we were all really excited waiting to see the final result, but when they told us it wouldn't be until May, around Independence Day, it somehow made sense to me. The atmosphere was more festive, the red carpet and flags, so at least for me it contributed to the overall impression, without disturbing each other and taking away its importance. We'll have to record another one and promote it on another date so we can compare," the musician said, revealing how the collaboration with the Public Service Broadcasting, which produced the video, came about.
"The RTCG came up with this great idea a year earlier to film a video for Montenegrin original bands and accompany it with a show in which the members of those bands speak, this is a continuation of the realization of that idea a year later. They invited us, asked if we were in the mood for it, of course we accepted with open arms, our job was to choose the song. After that, the director designed how the video would look, I made a few suggestions and the result is excellent, we and the viewers who have contacted us so far agree on that," he concludes.
"I like that the video is not a painting, it is not just a visual representation of what is already heard in the text, many moments leave room for everyone to interpret the details in their own way, I think that this multi-layeredness gives the song another level of depth," emphasizes Minić, who also explains why the choice fell on the song "Wreck".
"We deliberated for a relatively long time about which song we would choose to film, especially the fact that we were already starting preparations for our third album and logic dictated that we record a video for a new song, but we already had a plan to film one of the songs from the third album and we decided to try something older," he recalls.
"Since there were a lot of candidates, we started the elimination process. First, we gave up on two songs for which we had already filmed a video ('Desperado' and 'Don Quixote', with the latter never reaching the end of the process and probably that material is no longer available anywhere), as well as those that we had already played on live television performances and on playback, since most of them are certainly re-broadcast from time to time. From the rest, we looked for a song that would well represent what Rudolf does, and 'Olupina' seemed like a suitable choice to everyone. Looking back, I would say that we were not wrong," the interviewee of "Vijesti" believes.
As part of the documentary show, he says, the audience will have the opportunity to see some more details about the band Rudolf.
"The documentary is actually what we filmed for this video, it's one of the episodes of Alternativni puls and there we talked about the beginnings of Katarza, which later partly transformed into Rudolf, introduced the band, plans, the way we function, commented on the new material (which was so fresh at the time that I called the newly recorded song 'Knopfler', named after the legendary guitarist known also as the leader of the band Dire Straits, 'Klepton') and played a few things at the rehearsal along the way and I think the final result will be interesting. We had a great time," the musician said.
In the interview, Minić also reveals the stage of work on the new album.
"The selection phase is over, there is a possibility that one song will be replaced or added, but in general we already have an idea of the definitive concept of the third album. Some of the material is from the beginning of our playing together, one song is older than most of the ones that were on the first album, I'm not sure if 'Bajkerska' and 'Voz' are older than that or just one of them, at the time I didn't think it was something I would ever record, so I didn't even take those things into account, that's mostly that period," he continues.
"The largest part of the material is completely new, the announcement single, the aforementioned 'Knopfler', was created last and quite by accident, from the time I came up with that song during a return from a rehearsal from Podgorica to Kolašin until the moment it was recorded and released, not even a month passed. Basically, the songs have been selected, most of them have a full arrangement and are ready for recording, I reckon that we could have an album 'with a bang' in a month, but we don't want to rush, there's no need, we've been performing the material live a little bit, letting the songs come to life in contact with the audience and it would seem that everyone is satisfied and recognizes in these songs that 'thread' of Rudolf that connects songs that are otherwise completely different in genre, thematically and conceptually," the musician hinted.
As he says, "the most realistic expectation is that the album will be finished by the end of the summer."
"As I said, we don't want to rush to prove the old adage 'fast is short', we enjoy the process, we want to make sure that nothing was lost on the way from instrument to master and that everything will be at the best level that we can currently provide. As I said, we have already started playing some of the new material, it is best for the curious and willing to come to one of the performances and hear some of it, and until then I will hint that for the performance in Kolašin, which was made impossible by the downpour that completely flooded all the equipment and electricity on the stage, we have prepared two songs that we have never performed live before, and that on one of them two basses are played simultaneously, and on the other there is even a 'guest' ukulele," says Minić.
He also reveals that Rudolf will save all the remaining material from the album, except for the lead single, for the premiere of the entire album.
"When that work is finished. It's nicer that way, although people no longer have the habit of listening to an album in its entirety, hearing a song or part of a song, starting another, leaving it for later and returning or not. Although the songs are not thematically close and it is not a prerequisite to hear one in order to hear the other, I still support the idea that an album is always a concept, maybe not always theatrical, but together these songs form a series of deliberately designed changes in mood, rhythm, melody, a series of ups and downs that do not allow one to easily pass over the overall impression," he explains.
"We used to hear people say that we are a band that is too dark or too cheerful, and in fact the former only heard two or three 'dark' songs, the latter two or three 'cheerful' ones and based on that they formed an impression of our work, and the truth is that between, for example, 'Posljenj čino' and 'Očija grada' from the first album or between the song 'Još jedan krug' and, for example, the song 'Mirna' from the second, there is a whole series of nuances without which there is no chance of grasping what the album is about. That is why the older song that I mentioned was not among the 'peers' on the first album, but has been waiting for its company until now, not because it was a bad song then, it just didn't fit the idea. That is why it is better to offer everything so that whoever wants to hear it can hear it properly," said Minić.
When asked if the new album will bring more film adaptations, he says:
"There will definitely be a video, maybe more, but I think I can promise one."
Until the album is released, the audience will be able to hear Rudolf live, but for most of them, dates have not yet been defined.
"For most club and concert performances, we only have roughly confirmed dates and conditions, the agreement is that we will not announce them before the organizers. What has been announced so far is Craft Fest Montenegro in Podgorica, on the plateau between the National Library and the City Assembly, where Rudolf will also play on June 18th. We will already be playing both of our first albums there, unrecorded material and material from the third album, for those who are interested in hearing something new from us. A small tour and festivals are also planned, but we will inform about that on our social media accounts when the conditions are met. Basically, we can promise our music fans that this year Rudolf will not be missing on the radio, on television, or on the streets," promises Minić.
I love that the video isn't a painting, it's not just a visual representation of what's already heard in the lyrics, many moments leave room for everyone to interpret the details in their own way, I think that this multi-layeredness gives the song another level of depth.
We filmed the video in December and by God we were all really excited waiting to see the final result, but when they told us it wouldn't be until May, around Independence Day, it somehow made sense to me.
