American heavy/prog metal band Mastodon will release their first album in five years on August 28th, also the first after the sudden death of former frontman Brent Hinds.
The lead single from the album "Marrow Deep", the song "Snakes for Dinner", features guest vocals from Josh Homme of the band "Queens of the Stone Age".
"Marrow Deep", released by Loma Vista Records, is the first album by Mastodon's new lineup: founding members Brann Daylor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher are joined by new guitarist Nick Johnston. The album also features keyboardist João Nogueira. The band produced the album with Patrick Berger and Kurt Ballou.
Brent Hinds died in a motorcycle accident in August last year, five months after leaving the band.
The band returned last month with the song "Your Ghost Again," which features Sanders and drummer Daylor sharing vocals. Last week, the band released a short film, "The Mastodon in the Room," dedicated to the late member, which also reflected on his departure from the band. Later this year, Mastodon will embark on the "Poisonous Weapons Tour," which will feature Deafheaven and Alcest as opening acts.
Speaking in a press release about the follow-up to 2021's Hushed and Grim, Sanders said:
"Bill, Bran and I are thrilled to continue to do this, and we have new members who are thrilled to be a part of the band. It's a magical feeling that keeps us coming back to rehearsals. It reminds us of the very beginnings of the band, when all the members were eager to work, united and excited about what was ahead. We are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to record this album."
Homi and Mastodon already have a history of collaboration: "Snakes for Dinner" is their first song together since the track "Colony of Birchmen" from the 2006 album "Blood Mountain".
