Musician Lorde has sharply criticized Spotify's management for introducing artificial intelligence-generated song descriptions on the music streaming platform.
The "What Was That" hitmaker took to her Instagram Story on Thursday to criticize the new "About the Song" feature, which is still in development but is already available to a limited number of users.
To back up her claims, Lorde posted a screenshot of her song "Current Affairs" from 2025 on Spotify.
The song's description, which was generated by artificial intelligence, allegedly took a passage from themusic.com.au, in which the author states that the singer-songwriter turned this song into a "real performance", stripping down to her underwear while a dancer pours water over her stomach, so that the scene resembles the shower scene she sings about on stage.
In her post, Lorde pointed out that the AI description is inaccurate and completely unnecessary.
"I dare say we don't want this. Not only is it incorrect (it's not the song I did this during), but the fact that Spotify immediately offers an AI-generated meaning to the song limits the freedom of its interpretation, in my opinion. Please at least allow artists to turn this option off," the 29-year-old singer wrote.
Responding to the singer's remarks, a Spotify spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the AI-generated description had been removed.
"'About the Song' is a beta feature that displays information from third-party sources with attribution. We continue to improve it based on feedback from artists and fans," Spotify said.
Lorde released her fourth studio album, Virgin, last year. The New Zealand artist is currently on the Ultrasound World Tour, with her next concert scheduled for Saturday in the Czech Republic.
