The guitar that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain broke on stage was sold for almost 600 thousand dollars (about 560 thousand euros), the auction house announced on Saturday.
Julien's Auctions expected to get ten times less for the instrument.
The guitar was eventually sold at an auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York for about six thousand dollars, which the auction house declared "unbelievable", reports N1.
The black Fender Stratocaster has been reassembled, but is no longer playable.
The guitar has the signatures of three members of the iconic grunge band: Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl.
Cobain's cracks are still visible on the guitar, Cody Frederik of Julien's Auctions told Agence France-Presse.
"When he was on stage playing, Kurt Cobain was a machine. He was angry and it showed. Especially the way he handled his instruments," he said in May.
Frederik believes that a damaged guitar symbolizes a "damaged musician" and a "raw and stormy time" in music.
Nirvana was founded in the late eighties in the northwestern American state of Washington. The group gained wider fame in 1991 with the release of the second album "Nevermind", which sold more than 30 million copies.
The group's frontman became a blonde idol and the voice of a new generation, but throughout his life he struggled with addiction and health problems.
He committed suicide in Seattle in April 1994, at the age of 27.
