A transgender woman won the title of Miss Portugal for the first time and will compete with another transgender woman, Miss Netherlands, for the title of Miss Universe in Salvador.
Miss Portugal is Marina Mashete, a 28-year-old flight attendant, who is also the first transgender woman to apply for that beauty contest.
"I am proud to be the first trans woman to compete for the Miss Portugal title," she wrote on social media before winning the beauty pageant.
In July, the Dutchwoman Riki Kole became the first transgender woman to win the title of Miss Netherlands.
Marina Mašete and Riki Kole will succeed the Spaniard Anđela Ponsa, who in 2018 became the first transgender candidate for the Miss Universe title.
