In a world full of changes that shape everyday life, fashion is not only an aesthetic expression but also a powerful means of communicating messages. This philosophy is at the heart of creativity Milena Đurđić, a fashion designer from Montenegro, who combines artistic aesthetics with deeply thought-out social themes with her unique pieces.
In an interview with "Vijesti", Milena reveals how her fashion goes beyond the boundaries of mere clothing, becoming a tool for provoking reactions and reflections on identity, humanism, and social issues.
Milena Đurđić tells Vijesti how she is inspired by global events, from the pandemic to the fires in the Amazon, what it's like working with royal families, and why "zero" signifies infinity in her latest collection.
Where do you draw inspiration for your models - from culture, nature... or maybe your own environment?
All that. Therefore, I find inspiration in works of art, significant creators in the fields of literature, film, music, and science. I am often very busy with current social phenomena and social topics, as well as some natural phenomena. The coronavirus pandemic, fires in the Amazon, and global changes were also strong inspirations and themes for my collections.
What moment in your career do you consider the greatest success and why?
It is difficult to single out just one moment, but the "Rough Time" collection, inspired by the coronavirus pandemic, is considered the pinnacle of my work so far, as it was recognized at Montenegro Fashion Week as the best collection in the last 10 years, and was followed by an invitation to a prestigious gala event in Dubai “Smile Train Charity Gala”, where my works were presented to the royal family and selected world dignitaries. The "Rough Time" collection best illustrates my commitment to social issues. The combination of aesthetics, symbolism and strong messages makes it an authentic expression of my creativity.
Your favorite fashion show or collection that best represents you?
My first solo fashion show “Scarlet”, inspired by the unsurpassed dramatic character Scarlett O Hare, from the anthology film “Gone with the Wind”. Scarlett - a romantic and brave woman, who never gives up and after many blows of fate rises from the ashes and sets off again towards her goal - the return of love. The battles she lost are behind her, and the love she won gives her new energy and peace for tomorrow or some other, new, day. The indestructible spirit of this beautiful, romantic, emotional and temperamental, strong woman accompanies all my subsequent fashion stories.
How much does international recognition mean to you and how did you achieve it?
Acknowledgments for professional and artistic achievement have a special significance for us, because it is trust, appreciation and recognition, which represents a strong motivation for further work and achieving similar or better results. Recognition at the international level opens the door to the global fashion scene. I achieved them through continuous work, innovative ideas and a focus on universal themes that resonate with audiences around the world.

Which famous people have you collaborated with and how has that experience influenced your work?
Collaborating with numerous figures from the world of art, politics and diplomacy, with members of royal families and VIPs, at events such as those in Dubai, inspired me to achieve an even higher level of sophistication and adapt my work to an international audience.
How challenging is it to create unique pieces for individuals with specific requirements and styles?
It is challenging, but also inspiring. It is a challenge to balance the client's vision and my creative philosophy, but each such project is an opportunity to grow and explore new possibilities in design. Each such creation requires a deep understanding of the client's personality and aesthetics, which allows me to push the boundaries of creativity through my work.
How would you describe the balance between tradition and modernity in your models?
Tradition is the foundation of my design, but I always give it a contemporary interpretation through innovative solutions and harmonious combinations of colors and shapes. It is a subtle combination of past and present, which evokes nostalgic, but also modern emotions. By combining classic elements with modern details, I create a harmony that connects the past and the present, telling stories relevant to today's world.
What are you currently working on and what can we expect from you in the next collections?
I am currently working on my biggest multimedia project "0000" to date, which combines fashion, music, dance and acting. Messages. Moving forward is the leitmotif of this collection. Why “0” (zero)? That is why it is the zero moment, the (pre)beginning of creation, the circle (zero), the symbol of infinity. At the end of one cycle we return to zero, to our source, to our new beginning, to a new cycle and so on forever. The number “0” is Alpha (the beginning) and Omega (the highest), because there is no beginning and no end, in that series of zeros/circles (“0000”) everything is infinite, continuous cycles. A new, new, better world is being born... a new civilization.
In addition, I am intensively working on conceptual design solutions for uniforms for some new hotels in our tourist centers, which will mark their visual identity in an authentic and original way and, I hope, contribute to the tourism promotion of Montenegro.
Do you have plans to expand to new markets or cooperate with international brands?
Yes, I am working on expanding my presence in Europe, the UAE, the plan is also China, the USA, where my models will soon be available in the prestigious concept store in New York. Online sales are the primary step in the New Year.

What is your vision of the fashion scene in Montenegro and how do you plan to contribute to its development?
My vision is for Montenegro to become recognized for its innovative and quality designers. I plan to contribute by educating young talents, organizing events and developing my own brand as a role model. I would like Montenegro to become interesting to some quality agents, designers, and fashion experts who will recognize our creative potential in our market, in addition to the natural beauty that our country has. With stronger support from relevant institutions and the state, the fashion and creative industry can become one of the most profitable economic sectors here, as in many countries of the world, and make a significant contribution to the economic development of the country.
What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a fashion designer from Montenegro?
Lack of local textile industry and limited choice of materials, but also lack of institutional support for the fashion industry. Even so, I find that challenges encourage innovation and resourcefulness.
What would you say to young designers who want to build a career in the world of fashion?
I tell them to believe in their work, be original and ready to invest time and effort in improving something they have talent for and love. Fashion is a path full of challenges, but also incredible opportunities to express yourself and create change. Expect a lot of pebbles in those fashion shoes, they will blister, they will hurt, don't get confused, turn around and go back, just shake it off and continue on your way!
