Police have dismissed claims from a new independent investigation that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was killed by a third party.
Cobain was found dead on April 8, 1994, in his Seattle home, and it was officially determined that he died on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A new investigation led by two independent forensic experts claims that Cobain's death was actually a homicide. The experts say they studied the autopsy and available evidence and suggest that one or more people allegedly forced Cobain to overdose on heroin to incapacitate him, before he suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
In their paper, published in the International Journal of Forensic Sciences, the researchers claim:
"Kurt Cobain, based on publicly available data and analyzed through a multidisciplinary critical method, was the victim of murder. His body was removed from the scene of the murder and staged to look like a suicide."
However, the Seattle Police Department rejected these claims and refused to reopen the nearly 32-year-old case.
"Our investigator concluded that he died by suicide, and that remains the position of this administration," the statement said.
Cobain was married to singer Courtney Love at the time of his death, and the couple had a daughter, Frances Bean, who is now 33. So far, no member of Cobain's family has commented on the matter.
