Taylor Swift advises young artists to stop reading comments on social media. She explained that criticism can sometimes serve as a "creative stimulus", but that reading comments on social media exposes artists to too much negative feedback.

"My favorite thing when I sit down with new artists or writers is to ask them, 'Why do you read the comments?' It's just too much of everything," she said.

"You're flooding yourself with criticism that doesn't really have a real focus. You have to accept a little bit of it as part of the job. But don't let it make you stop writing or censor yourself," she added.

Swift, who is 36, also revealed that she advises fellow musicians to respond to criticism through song, rather than directly addressing "trolls."

"If you find some criticism interesting and want to respond to it, then it's actually a gift because you can write something new. Maybe you wouldn't have written a poem that day otherwise. But don't write announcements in the Notes app, write a poem about it. Make art out of it. Don't respond to trolls in the comments. That's not what the audience wants from you. People want your art," she advises.

The music star has said that criticism throughout her career has been "a big fuel" and the starting point for many of her songs. She cited her 2014 hit "Blank Space" as an example, which she says would not have existed if it weren't for the comments about her romantic relationships.

Speaking about the 2022 song "Anti-Hero", she added:

"That song wouldn't exist if I hadn't been criticized for almost every aspect of my personality that bothered someone."
