On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the series “Game of Thrones”, which is celebrated this year, the stars of the series Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) reunited on Variety magazine's “Actors on Actors” show.
When Dinklage asked Harington what he had been doing since the series ended, the actor responded honestly:
“I had to sober up.”
The British actor went to rehab for "stress, exhaustion and alcohol problems" just as the final season was airing, and later spoke openly about how much fame had weighed on him.
"I decided to go to rehab while the first episode of the eighth and final season was airing, and I spent six weeks there. I had to get sober. I had to get my mind straight," Dinklage told Dinkley.
“I thought, ‘Wait a minute, I have to do a bunch of promotions. You need to be in the spotlight.’ But it was a good decision to say, ‘Actually, I’m quitting. I can’t take this,’” he added, noting that another important decision was not to watch that final season.
“Then I decided to take a year off to get myself in order. Just when I was planning to go back to work, Covid happened. It was a very strange time. Big social upheaval and personal upheaval. But it allowed me to understand who I really am. And whether I even want to continue doing this job. A lot of the work on ‘Game of Thrones’ came from pain. I think the character himself was like that,” he concluded.
