Musician Bruce Springsteen has apologized to the U2 frontman for refusing to use his song "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" for a GAP ad in collaboration with Bono's (RED) foundation.
During the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award ceremony at the Tribeca Festival, Bono recalled that he asked Springsteen for permission to use the song in 2007 after joining forces with GAP through the (PRODUCT) RED campaign, which raised funds to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.
"That was a big mistake. I should have said yes," Springsteen replied.
He added that it is one of his favorite songs, although, as he says, "the audience doesn't really care much for it."
"It's just a song that I love. Hell, I still think about it and think, 'Bono asked you to put this song in a TV commercial.' I should have, damn it! People might have seen it as a hit. So I have to apologize," he said.
At the beginning of the event, Tribeca Festival founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal introduced Bono, who then heaped praise on Springsteen.
"Bruce Springsteen is America. Bruce made poetry out of the voices of ordinary people and turned that poetry into music. Tonight we honor him as a musician, a poet, an activist and a patriot," said Bono.
