Nearly two years into Donald Trump's second term, Laverne Cox says that as a black transgender woman, she is feeling the effects of his administration's policies on her bank account.
The Emmy Award winner recently said she has “lost a lot of money” because brands are now “very afraid” to work with her due to the White House’s continued dismantling of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program.
"I've lost so much money to this administration over the past year. I've managed to stay busy with acting, brand collaborations, and public appearances. But I never thought that college speaking engagements would almost completely disappear," Cox told Attitude magazine.
After landing her breakout role in the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black” at the age of 40, Cox pointed out that she previously had no savings or retirement fund, and was burdened with student loans.
The author of Transcendent has since given speeches across the US in an effort to "humanize" transgender people and highlight their life stories.
However, after Trump began his second presidential term last January, numerous Hollywood studios and media companies began to follow his administration's guidelines on reducing or eliminating the DEI program.
"This administration is very strict about anything that has to do with DEI programs or so-called gender ideology, and corporations are very scared of that. Over the past year or two, I've had to reach into my savings and retirement fund," the actress said.
