Jagger listened to Lennon and never met Elvis

Mick Jagger believes he made a mistake by following John Lennon's advice and never meeting Elvis Presley.

Appearing on the podcast "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend," the Rolling Stones frontman revealed that Lennon once warned him not to try to meet the "king of rock and roll."

"I remember John telling me, 'You should never meet your idols. If I were you, Mike, I would never meet Elvis.' So I didn't do it. I took John's advice. It was really stupid of me. I wish I had met Elvis," Jagger said.

Lennon met Elvis Presley in 1965, but Jagger revealed that he repeatedly advised him not to try to meet the "Jailhouse Rock" star. Presley died in 1977 at the age of 42.

"I wanted to keep my Elvis for myself, my version of Elvis. I didn't want that image to collapse, like what happened to John. Although, maybe my version of Elvis would be different," said the 82-year-old musician.

Lennon was murdered in 1980, at the age of 40.

Continuing the conversation, Jagger also addressed his friendly rivalry with David Bowie.

He revealed that Bowie played him the song "The Jean Genie" before its release in 1973 and admitted that it was a kind of "homage" to The Rolling Stones.

"I said to him, 'God, you picked up all my stuff.' And he said, 'Yeah, I know. I know. But it's a tribute to you. It's a tribute.' Yeah, of course. A tribute," Jagger said with a laugh.

Speaking about his relationships with other great musicians, Jagger added that he also had a competitive relationship with John Lennon.

"I think John and I were very competitive, but more in terms of who was going to be more sarcastic," he said.
