American scientists from the University of Rochester warn that e-cigarettes can damage teeth and gums just like traditional cigarettes.
The results of laboratory research conducted on samples of the gums of non-smokers contradict the claims that e-cigarettes are a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, writes the expert magazine "Oncotarget".
It has been shown that the use of e-cigarettes causes the release of inflamed proteins in the cells of the gums, which worsens cellular stress and results in damage that can lead to a number of diseases of the oral cavity, reports the media.
The frequency of these damages increases proportionally with the more frequent use of e-cigarettes, the researchers added.
An additional risk has been observed when using chemical compounds that add flavors in e-cigarettes.
E-cigarettes also contain nicotine, a known risk factor for gum disease.
