Babies can learn verses while they are still in the womb, according to research conducted at the University of Florida.

Scientists asked 32 women to recite poems out loud twice a day from the 28th to the 34th week of pregnancy. After that, they had a test, during which they played recordings of the same verses, measuring the heartbeat of the fetus.

The study showed that at 34 weeks, the fetal heart rate calmed down in response to familiar verses. "We practically asked the fetus, 'If your mother repeats the lyrics to you, will you remember them?'" says research author Charlene Kruger, "When she speaks, not only does the baby hear it, but her whole spine vibrates".
