A study based on the example of Trip Advisor and Ireland confirmed that one website can really have an impact on an entire industry, and thus on the country's economy, reports 24.hr.
With its billion dollars in annual revenues and over 60 million users, TripAdvisor is the most popular and strongest site for viewing and booking tourist facilities in the world. What started back in 2000 as another website with pictures of destinations and recommendations, has turned into a tool that directly affects the quality of a country's tourist season.
Through a parallel analysis of the hotel offer in Dublin and Las Vegas between 2007 and 2009, the University of Dublin observed a change in the dynamics of accommodation reservations in accordance with the changes in the ratings of the offer, i.e. the growth of the so-called bubbles and an asterisk for the quality mark.
Namely, while in Ireland hoteliers began to appreciate the remarks of their guests and react by improving their offers, in Las Vegas the situation remained unchanged.
Over the two-year period, the Irish progressed with recommendations from 3.6 bubbles to 3.8, resulting in more frequent bookings and revenue growth. Independent research by analysts from Tourism Economics also showed that user-generated content from TripAdvisor annually generates 1,7 billion dollars in revenue, or 2,2 percent of the total tourist revenue of Great Britain.
