Anger is spreading across Germany after the authorities of a German province recently decided to euthanize or expel a dog that has been caring for a comatose boy for years.
Dilan is ten years old and has been a vegetarian since birth. Taša entered his life six years ago, and since then, while Taša is with the boy, the devices that monitor his breathing and heart rate show improvements in the boy's condition.
Tasha comes to Dylan's room every morning and gently pulls his blanket with her teeth, licks his feet and sits above his head, thus protecting him.
Dylan's parents, Barbara and Eckard, moved from Berlin to the small town of Schönwald, in Brandenburg, in the north-east of Germany, so that Dylan would stay in a more peaceful environment. Although they found peace for the boy here, they also encountered a problem due to the rules of the state of Brandenburg that do not allow pit bull terriers to be kept.
Although Tasha has been vaccinated, passed tests, was trained by certified trainers, the authorities in Brandenburg want to ban her from staying with the boy because she recently had a fight with another dog that was only slightly injured.
In one of the associations for the protection of animals, they state that Taša did not even start the quarrel, and Dilan's father apologized and said that he would pay the expenses of the veterinarian for the injured dog, but nothing of all came to fruition, the authorities in that province are determined either Tasha leaves that part of Germany or she will be put to sleep.
Dylan's doctor also supported the dog, stating that they should not be separated, because the dog has a good effect on the boy's health.
"We have to keep Tasha with Dylan, she brings him joy. When she is with him, our son reacts and is happy, his breathing is quieter, and his heartbeat is more normal, and it must be only because of that dog," said Dylan's father.
The mayor of Schönvald previously said that he could not do anything.
"My hands are tied. The case is clear - this dog bit another. What will happen if it bites a man or a child".
But after protests across the country, Dylan's parents will have another meeting with the mayor and other authorities on the case next Sunday.
The mayor's office now states that, if it is proven that Taša is a therapy dog, they will still try to find a solution to this problem.
