Going to the gym has great benefits for your health, but few of us think about the million bacteria that reside on the weights, machines and yoga mats. Fitness centers are breeding grounds for bacteria that cause severe infections.
Doctors advise how to avoid infections that can be very serious.
1. Keep your hands away from others
Dermatologist Araša Akhavan said that staphylococcus, which can lead to MRSA, is the biggest threat to people who go to joint gyms. It is easily transferred, especially through sweat. This bacteria lives in one third of the population, but is mostly harmless. But if you get infected through a skin wound, this infection can be fatal.
2. Always bring your yoga mats
Mats are a breeding ground for bacteria, so it is advised to bring your own mat and towel. Using shared mats leads to fungal infection, ringworm and skin scabs.
3. Wear slippers when showering and changing
Showers and locker rooms in halls are a potential breeding ground for warts. This does not mean that you should not shower, but that you should wear adequate footwear when you do. Also, touch the tiles with bare skin as little as possible.
4. Do not use jacuzzis and saunas
It is best to avoid damp rooms, including saunas and jacuzzis. They are the source of itchy folliculitis. If it spreads throughout the body, the patient must be hospitalized and drink antibiotics.
5. Disinfect all equipment before touching it
Rhinoviruses, which are responsible for most colds, can be found in almost half of the equipment that requires contact with hands, which is not sufficiently cleaned. Therefore, clean all surfaces that you need to touch with your hand in order to exercise.
In a large number of fitness centers, there are disinfectant liquids near the equipment that help prevent the spread of the virus, reports klix.ba.
