British public health officials say people are less active after the age of 40, and amid concerns that high levels of inactivity can harm their health, say middle-aged people should walk more and walk faster.
They say that just ten minutes of regular daily walking and brisk walking reduces the risk of premature death by 15 percent.
According to their estimates, as many as 41 percent of people aged 40 to 60 do not take a brisk walk even once a month. Also, they associate every sixth death with inactivity.
On average, people are 20 percent less active than in the 24s, and on average they walk XNUMX km less per year than they did two decades ago.
To help middle-aged people, a government agency is promoting the use of the free Active 10 app, which tracks how much you move and offers advice on how to increase activity and fit it into your daily routine.
"Walking to the grocery store or taking a ten-minute brisk walk during your lunch break has numerous health benefits," said Jenny Harris, director of the UK government's public health agency, Klix.ba reports.
