In an era where streaming services bombard us with new content every day, it's easy to get lost in the choices of what to watch next. We often reach for American or British productions, but maybe it's time to give something different a chance — Scandinavian series that have conquered the world in recent years with their atmospheric stories, dark tone, and original characters.
If you haven't already, check out some of these series on Netflix — you might discover your new favorite title:
“Anxious People”
An adaptation of a Swedish bestseller, a mix of crime story and comedy. The plot begins with an unusual “bank robbery” — which turns out to be a complete fiasco. A robber accidentally enters an apartment with an open door and ends up as a hostage with a group of very unusual characters: real estate agents, a couple obsessed with IKEA products, a pregnant woman, a millionaire… and a man in a rabbit costume. The series has six episodes and guarantees unexpected twists, but also smiles.
“Billionaire Island”
A Norwegian black comedy that follows two families from a neighboring coastal town – sworn rivals in the salmon industry. Authors Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin, known for the Lilyhammer series, bring us a blend of absurdity, social tensions and eccentric characters.
“The Chestnut Man”
One of the most acclaimed Danish crime series in recent times. The story follows the investigation of monstrous murders in a Copenhagen suburb, where the only clue is a chestnut figurine placed at the crime scene. It is led by two detectives – Naia Thulin and Mark Hess – whose investigation leads through dark secrets and surprises.
“The Breakthrough”
A Swedish miniseries based on true events. In the small town of Linköping (early 2000s), a mysterious double murder occurs — a child and a woman. With no clear motive or suspects, the case falls silent… until it is reopened years later. The series explores complex investigative methods and human destinies over time.
“Young Royals”
A coming-of-age drama from Sweden that has won over audiences around the world. It follows Prince Wilhelm as he moves to a prestigious boarding school, where he must balance his title with the needs of his heart. As the story progresses, love, friendship, identity, and duty come to the fore. It is often described as a modern royal soap opera, but with depth and layered characters.
“The Åre Murders”
A Swedish crime drama that stands out for its atmosphere and local intrigue. The main character Hanna, after a crisis in her life, moves in with her sister in a mountainous landscape where a young girl disappears on Saint Lucia's Night. The local police are overwhelmed, so Hanna becomes a reluctant partner in the investigation — and soon discovers that behind the idyllic landscapes lie dark secrets.
Why watch Scandinavian series?
• Atmosphere and aesthetics – they are often dark, subtle, with carefully constructed environments and a minimalist style.
• Stories that radiate reality – the characters are not caricatures, but complex individuals with internal struggles.
• Unusual plots – often a combination of crime, psychology, drama, and humor.
• Language and culture – provide a glimpse into Scandinavian society, mentality and aesthetics, which adds an additional exoticism.
