The best cities are not only interesting to tourists: they must also be pleasant to the people who live there every day. Time-out Therefore, from its global survey, it extracted the responses of those under 30 and created a list of cities where Generation Z rated life the best. Only the highest-ranked city from each country was taken into account.
Tokyo took first place. Young people appreciate its walkability, excellent public transportation, rich culture and almost endless options for a night out. All respondents included in the ranking said they find joy in everyday experiences in the Japanese capital, while 89 percent rated the nightlife positively. Its weak point is the price: only a third of respondents found the nightlife affordable.
Porto came in second, with a sense of community, beauty and a more affordable lifestyle. The city combines sea, river, parks, historic centre and cultural attractions, and 93 per cent of younger respondents described it as affordable. Melbourne came in third, thanks to its strong restaurant and cultural scene, vibrant neighbourhoods and a wide range of youth-friendly activities.
Edinburgh, Shanghai, New York, Copenhagen, Berlin, Valencia and Bangkok are also among the top ten. The reasons vary: in some cases safety and quality of life are crucial, in others the opportunity to meet new people, accessible art, nightlife, nature or simply the ease of moving around the city.
The results show that Generation Z expects more from a city than just entertainment. Young people are looking for a place where they can easily move around, socialize, and participate in cultural life, but also to feel a sense of belonging and satisfaction in their everyday lives. It is this combination that earned Tokyo the top spot.
