The results of a study conducted by the University of Bath in Great Britain showed that it would be best to refrain from meals if you want to burn more fat during exercise.
Two groups of subjects participated in the research, whose blood was taken for analysis before and after exercise.
The first group walked for 60 minutes at a maximum oxygen consumption of 60 percent on an empty stomach, while the second group went for a two-hour walk after a high-calorie breakfast that mainly consisted of carbohydrates.
Gene expression in adipose tissue increased when the men skipped meals before exercise, and decreased after eating, which means that the body drew energy from stored fat and not from carbohydrates from breakfast.
However, the scientists point out that there were only ten men in the experimental group and that the influence of meals in other parts of the day on exercise was not considered, so it is still too early to talk about final conclusions.
The research was published in the "American Journal of Physiology", reports B92.
