Gel nail polishes, a favorite accessory for women across Europe, are undergoing a major change from September 2025. The European Union is introducing a ban on the use of the chemical substance TPO in cosmetic products – including most gel polishes used in nail salons.
TPO is used as a photoinitiator – the key component that allows gel polish to “cure” under UV or LED light. Although most users have never heard of this substance, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has classified TPO as a potential hormone disruptor and a possible carcinogen.
This decision was made in accordance with EU regulations that automatically ban all substances with proven risks to reproductive health, unless their safety and the absence of alternative substances are proven - which was not the case with TPO.
Who is at the greatest risk?
Although the risk to end users – women who regularly use gel polish – is considered low if the products are used correctly, the most severe negative effects threaten salon workers. Long-term daily exposure to TPO fumes, especially when applying and filing the gel, carries an increased risk of allergic reactions, hormonal disruptions, reduced fertility and fetal damage during pregnancy.
How will salons react?
All salons and distributors have until September 1, 2025, to remove remaining stocks of products containing TPO. After that date, their sale and professional use are prohibited throughout the EU.
Although part of the industry has already switched to TPO-free alternatives, many salons, according to owners, only recently received information about the ban – most often through trade associations, while numerous distributors omitted official notifications.
The ban on TPOs represents an important step towards healthier and more responsible beauty. While the change may cause short-term logistical challenges for salons, the goal of the EU regulation is clear: to protect the health of users and professionals who work with these products every day.
Women across Europe are urged to be informed, be careful when choosing products, and talk to their salons about safe alternatives.
