Making homemade soap at home is not complicated, but it does require attention and adherence to safety rules, as caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is used.
Olive oil is most often chosen for a basic, mild soap.
It is necessary
- 1 liter of olive oil,
- 130 grams of caustic soda
- 300 milliliters of distilled water
- Essential oils or dried herbs can be added if desired
Before starting work, protective gloves and goggles are mandatory, as is ventilation of the room. Caustic soda is always added to water - never the other way around. The soda is slowly poured into distilled water, stirring until it is completely dissolved. The mixture is heated, so it should be left to cool to about 40 to 45 degrees.
Meanwhile, the olive oil is gently heated to approximately the same temperature. When both the oil and the soda solution are in the same temperature range, the soda solution is slowly poured into the oil, stirring constantly. Stir by hand or with a hand mixer until the mixture becomes thicker, resembling pudding - this is a sign that the saponification process has begun.
Then, if desired, essential oils or herbal supplements are added, and the mixture is poured into molds. The molds are covered with a cloth and left for 24 to 48 hours, until the soap sets. After removing from the mold, the soap is cut into pieces and left to mature for four to six weeks in a dry and airy place. Only after this period does the soap become firm and soft enough to use.
