Many people like to lie down immediately after a meal, especially if it was a large meal. But as appealing as it is, is it good for digestion?
Gastroenterologist Peyton Berookim, MD. explains that there are a few things you should know if you have a habit of lying down right after a meal.
"When you do that there's a chance that the food you've eaten will find its way back up and you could have acid in your esophagus," says Dr. Berookim.
"Then there is a burning sensation in the chest and throat, a sour taste as well. Reflux can potentially irritate the airways and cause coughing, but also mimic some of the symptoms of asthma," he adds.
Dr. Berookim believes that the rule should be not to lie down after eating, and this especially applies to those who have stomach problems. "There aren't any conditions or scenarios where something terrible will happen if you do it, it's just an unnatural position for your digestive system."
Whether you lie down on a towel on the beach after a meal or sprawl out on the couch at home, wait a while before doing it. The doctor says it should be about 30 minutes. If you really have to lie down, then put a few pillows under your back so it's actually a semi-lying position.
If you want to go to bed immediately after a late dinner, you have to wait a little longer. "I often advise having dinner a little earlier, about 2 hours before going to bed," explains Dr. Berookim. If you're struggling with existing stomach problems, one study suggests you should wait four hours, he reports Ordinacija.hr.
