Antibiotics are used to stop or reduce the growth of bacteria. The original antibiotics, like many antibiotics today, come from natural sources. Certain plant extracts, essential oils, and even foods have antibiotic properties.
Plants, vegetables...
For example, some extracts obtained from vegetables can prevent the growth of bacteria in food. Cranberry extract contains both antibacterial and antioxidant compounds, making it beneficial for urinary tract infections (UTIs). And plants can be antibiotics. A small study that included sampling of 58 Chinese herbs showed that 23 of them have antibacterial properties and 15 have antifungal properties. A 2014 study found that herbal therapy is just as effective as a classic antibiotic in treating small bowel bacterial overgrowth disorder.
Here are five natural antibiotics that are considered the most effective.
With
Honey is one of the oldest known antibiotics, originating from ancient times. The Egyptians often used honey as a natural antibiotic and skin protectant. Honey contains hydrogen peroxide, which may explain some of its antibacterial properties. It's also high in sugar, which can help stop the growth of certain bacteria.
In addition, honey has a low pH. This causes moisture to be withdrawn from the bacteria, causing the bacteria to dehydrate and stop reproducing.
To use honey as an antibiotic, apply it directly to a wound or infected area. Honey can help kill bacteria and aid in the healing process. If possible, opt for raw honey.
To treat "internal" infections, swallow a tablespoon whole or mix it into a cup of warm herbal tea as a soothing treat.
Honey is generally safe to use on the skin or in the body, although you should never give honey to babies under one year old.
Garlic extract
Garlic has long been thought to have antimicrobial properties. A 2011 study found that garlic concentrate is effective in fighting bacteria. You can buy garlic concentrate or extract at a health food store. You can make it yourself by soaking a few cloves of garlic in olive oil.
Garlic is generally safe, but large doses can cause internal bleeding. Up to two cups a day is considered an acceptable dose. If you are taking a garlic supplement, be sure to follow the dosage instructions.
If you are taking blood thinners, consult your doctor before using garlic as an antibiotic. Large doses of garlic can increase the effects of drugs that prevent blood clotting.
Myrrh extract
Many people know about myrrh, but its ability to defend the body against harmful germs is not so widely known. In a 2000 study, researchers concluded that myrrh extract can prevent the reproduction of several pathogens, including:
- E. coli
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Candida albicans
Consuming this extract can cause diarrhea. If you apply myrrh to your skin, you may develop a small rash on your skin. If consumed in large doses, myrrh can cause heart problems.
Thyme essential oil
Many natural household cleaners contain thyme essential oil. This oil has been shown to be particularly useful against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In a 2011 study, researchers tested the effectiveness of lavender and thyme essential oils. Both oils were tested in a pool of over 120 bacterial strains. Researchers found that thyme essential oil was more effective at killing bacteria than lavender essential oil.
Thyme essential oil is for external use only. You should not take thyme oil by mouth. Before applying to the affected area, be sure to dilute the essential oil with equal parts of coconut or olive oil. Applying undiluted essential oil to the skin can cause inflammation and irritation.
People with high blood pressure or thyroid problems should not use thyme essential oil.
Oregano essential oil
Carvacrol is an ingredient found in oregano essential oil. Oregano oil has been found to help heal stomach ulcers and reduce inflammation.
To treat yeast infections on your skin, add one drop of oregano essential oil per teaspoon of a carrier oil such as olive or coconut oil. Apply the mixture to the affected area.
You can also diffuse oregano oil in the air to help clear up sinus infections.
Make a home cleaner
You can eradicate bacteria in your home with a homemade cleaner made from the following ingredients:
- oregano essential oil
- vinegar
- water
- lemon
