Bay leaf is often used in cooking, but did you know how healthy this herb actually is, and that it can help you cure various diseases and relieve stress in less than five minutes?
Improves digestion
Thanks to its numerous useful ingredients, laurel stimulates the digestion process, removes stomach and stomach cramps, and promotes better blood circulation. Laurel tea is also used in the treatment of anorexia, i.e. loss of appetite. In addition, laurel oil successfully treats fungal diseases, such as fungal nail infections, because this oil also has a strong antifungal effect.
Relieves pain
Bay oil is used to treat earaches, bruises, sprains. The strong analgesic effect of laurel essential oil makes it an almost irreplaceable ingredient in pain therapy. Laurel is also used against headaches because it contains parthenolides, substances that have a beneficial effect on migraines.
Also, this plant successfully fights against rheumatism, and you can easily remove pain in the joints with a laurel oil poultice that you can easily make yourself. Crush 20 g of fresh (ripe) laurel berries in an avan, which you will boil for 15 minutes in one liter of boiling water. Strain the resulting juice through a cloth and let it cool. Scoop the oil from the surface and mix it with a teaspoon of unsalted lard. Mix the resulting mixture well and store it in a glass or plastic jar. Rub the obtained mixture on the painful area, in a thin layer, two to three times a day.
Laurel for expectoration
Laurel oil is one of the most powerful preparations for strengthening the body and prevention, because it cleans the lymphatic system. For example, rubbing a few drops on swollen lymph glands produces an immediate feeling of relief. It is also recommended as a proven expectorant, but also for the treatment of varicose veins.
Tea made from this plant has been shown to be effective in treating diabetes as well as removing salt from the joints. Thanks to eugenol, it has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. For this very reason, advocates of folk medicine recommend a cloth wrap, previously soaked in water in which a bay leaf has been boiled. This poultice helps with colds, flu, coughs and bronchitis.
Heals bunions
Painful growths on the legs, i.e. bunions, can also be treated with this food. Take five large bay leaves, chop them and pour them with 100 ml of 70% alcohol (or homemade brandy). Let it stand for a week, then strain. Rub the buns with the resulting mixture, but before that, steam your feet well in warm water (three liters of water and one tablespoon of baking soda). Then wipe your feet, apply oil, put on short cotton socks and lie down.
Getting rid of excess salt
In the evening, pour one tablespoon of finely chopped bay leaves with three dl of water and cook in a suitable enameled container for no longer than five minutes. Pour the resulting liquid into a thermos and leave it overnight. In the morning, strain the liquid into another container and distribute the resulting drink throughout the day. Drink in small sips, never drink it all at once. After seven days you can repeat this treatment.
If frequent urination occurs, it is a sign that the bay leaf has begun to dissolve salts, which can irritate the bladder. The real results of this treatment will be visible only after ten days, when you will feel much lighter, and the pain in the joints will disappear.
Against stress
This inexpensive herb that you are sure to have in your kitchen can help you relieve stress and tension in less than five minutes. In fact, Russian scientists recently discovered that laurel relieves an incredible amount of stress.
All you have to do is burn the laurel in the ashtray. Leave the room for 10 minutes, and when you come back, you will notice a completely different atmosphere. You will feel a pleasant, relaxing smell. Due to the release of certain substances by combustion, a positive flow of energy is created. Take a deep breath and let the scent soothe your mind and body!
Laurel cultivation
Laurel grows in well-drained soil in a sunny or slightly shady position. The soil can be clayey, sandy or loamy. Propagation of laurel is through seeds, cuttings, saplings and layering. Laurel should be pruned in the summer and the shoots removed when they appear.
It tolerates pruning very well, so it is shaped like a tree, a bush or in a pyramidal shape. The leaves are used fresh or dry, and are collected in summer and during drought. Freshly dried leaves have a stronger taste and aroma than fresh leaves.
Dried leaves should never be stored for more than a year, because they will lose their taste. Bay leaves should be stored in a jar protected from air and light. Dry bay leaves can also be used to improve the taste of food.
Laurel is very resistant to diseases and pests, so it is ideal for planting next to sensitive plants.
Bay leaf as a spice
Bay leaf is a spice commonly used to add flavor to meat dishes because of its light, herbal flavor. Sometimes it is sold in stores as a powder or as a fresh leaf, but it is most often found as a dry, whole leaf. A bay leaf is added during cooking and removed before serving, as the leaf itself is difficult to chew and digest. And contrary to popular myth, the bay leaf is not poisonous. It is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, iron and manganese.
