With the arrival of higher temperatures, many of us are thinking about one of the biggest struggles, and that is how to get enough sleep during the extreme heat.
According to Dr. Nerina Ramlakhan, the optimal temperature for sleeping is between 16 and 21 degrees Celsius, and your brain needs to be slightly cooler than the rest of your body, writes the Independent.
"Sleep is very important for processing information during the day, as well as for repairing and restoring balance in the physical and psychological sense. Ideally, in order to sleep well, there must be a fractional temperature difference between our body and brain, a warm body and a cold head,” said Ramlakhan.
He discovered several tricks to cool down before bed.
"Smear yourself with an aloe vera-based cream, keep that cream in the fridge. Also, fill an empty bottle with chilled water and keep it by the bed. You can spray it on your face, neck and knees to cool down," he said.
Choose cotton pajamas and thin, clean cotton sheets as cotton is the ideal material for bed sheets.
Be careful not to eat too much protein as it can actually heat up your body by boosting your metabolism.
Eat spicy food, but at least three hours before bed, it can make you sweat. Exercise in the morning rather than in the evening to prevent your body from overheating.
Take a shower before bed to lower your body temperature.
Contrary to popular belief, windows should be kept closed during the day to keep the house cooler.
Finally, experts note that you should turn off all electrical devices in the bedroom, because they generate heat.
