Loud snoring thins the skull, and research has found that in these people, the skull becomes thinner by 1,23 millimeters over time.
American scientists have not determined why this happens, but they have warned that a one-millimeter erosion of the skull can cause a cerebrospinal fluid leak that can be life-threatening.
This can also cause symptoms of dementia, lead to a coma, cause a stroke or even lead to death.
Snoring occurs when the walls of the throat are relaxed and tight during sleep, causing interruptions in breathing. It is estimated that 100 million people worldwide have this problem.
"Obstructive sleep apnea may mechanistically contribute to the development of disorders associated with cranial thinning. Cerebrospinal fluid leakage is associated with obesity and middle age. Additional research is needed to identify the mechanisms leading to snoring causing cranial thinning." , said dr. Rick Nelson, author of the study.
Researchers recorded the skulls of 114 people between the ages of 40 and 60, 56 of whom have a problem with occasional or constant snoring.
The research was published in the journal JMA Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.
Previous research has revealed that loud snoring is also associated with Alzheimer's disease, reports klix.ba.
