The Swiss "Grier" cheese was declared the best in the world by a vote of a record number of participants from 26 countries at the World Cheese Competition in the American state of Wisconsin.
For the producer of the winning cheese, Michael Spicher from Bern, from the dairy "Mountain Dairy Fritzenhaus" (Mountain Dairy Fritzenhaus), it is the second victory at the "World Championship", as he also won in 2008.
The runner-up is also from Switzerland: the hard cow's milk cheese "Galus Grand CRU" produced by "Hardegger Kaese AG", the "Wisconsin State Journal" newspaper reported.
Held every other year in Madison, the largest cheese, butter and yogurt competition in the world began Tuesday with a record 3.667 products nominated for awards.
Cheese was tasted by 55 judges, who during the competition evaluated 132 categories of dairy products in addition to cheese. The judges were professional cheese judges, producers as well as buyers, dairy technology professors and scientific researchers from 19 countries around the world and 14 US states.
At the previous competition, in 2018, the French hard sheep's milk cheese "Eskiru", produced by "Moleon Fromažeri", won the most awards.
Due to the inability to travel due to the new coronavirus, one judge and 30 people from a university in Japan were absent from this year's competition, the organizers announced.
