Summer heat often creeps into our homes, turning an apartment or house into a real sauna. But what if you don't have air conditioning – or you just don't like using it? The good news is that there are a number of natural and effective ways to cool down a space without the electricity consumption and noise of cooling devices. Here's how!
1. Smart window opening and closing
The foundation of a cool home is controlling airflow. Closing windows during the hottest part of the day (10 a.m. to 18 p.m.) prevents hot air from entering. Instead:
Open the windows wide early in the morning and in the evening to ventilate and "change the air".
If you can, create a draft – open windows on opposite sides of the home for better circulation.
If you have one, in the late evening hours, place a fan by the window to "pull" warm air out of the room.
2. Turn off and avoid heating devices
Much more heat than we think comes from within – and from ourselves. The kitchen, the lighting, the chargers, the TV, the laptops – they all emit heat.
Don't cook during the day – choose cold meals instead (salads, sandwiches, fruit bowls).
Use LED lighting – they heat up the space less.
Unplug devices when not in use.
Use the washing machine and dryer late at night.
3. Fan + ice = home air conditioning
If you have a regular fan, use it wisely. Place a bowl of ice or bottles of frozen water in front of the fan. The air passing over the cold surface cools the space and creates a refreshing feeling.
You can add a few drops of essential oil (e.g. peppermint) for an additional refreshing effect.
4. Dim the light and heat with blinds and curtains
Use light curtains made of natural materials (cotton, linen) that reflect light and allow air to pass through.
Keep blinds and shutters down during the day, especially on the south and west sides.
Light tones of walls and furniture reflect light and visually "cool" the space.
5. Bring in natural freshness
Plants are natural air purifiers and can help make a space feel fresher and cooler. They are especially good for:
- Areca palm
- Sansevieria (mother-in-law's tongue)
- Green lily (chlorophytum)
Spray the leaves with water occasionally – this creates additional humidity and freshness in the air.
6. Night mode: how to sleep without air conditioning
Replace bedding with clean cotton sheets
Sleep closer to the floor – heat is retained at the top
Before going to bed, take a shower with lukewarm (not ice!) water.
Tip for extra comfort: Spray your pillowcase with lavender water – it's cooling and relaxing.
Even without air conditioning, your home can be a pleasant place to recover from the heat. It's the small changes that make a big difference: ventilation, smart use of lighting, cool tricks and natural solutions. With a little planning and creativity, your home can become a summer oasis of freshness – quiet, comfortable and without unnecessary energy consumption.
