Although the Keković family has been producing wines for more than 40 years, with the establishment of the Keković CO doo company in 2018, the Keković Estate brand officially started operating, and the products have been on the market since 2021.
Keković Winery is one of the fastest growing wineries in Montenegro. On the site of Novo Selo, where the winery is located, there are 1,5 hectares of vines, this year they planned to expand on the same site, so they will end the year 2024 with 2,5 hectares of vineyards. In 2022, one of the highest vineyards in the region was planted, with 3 ha of white grape varieties at the Kopilje site, at 630 meters above sea level. Under lease for two years, the Keković Winery cultivates 5 hectares of vineyards in Beri. By purchasing 4ha of land in 2024 in Donji Zagarč, in the locality of Jabuke, they planned to expand their own vineyards with 20.000 vines. Today, the Keković Winery processes a total of about 40000 vines.
There are 300 olive trees on the estate, and up to 1000 trees are planned to be planted, so that extra virgin olive oil, which is currently produced for its own needs, can also be marketed.
In 2019, the winery started modestly with the production of only 5.500 bottles. However, with dedication and vision, in just four years, until 2023, they achieved impressive and dizzying growth, increasing their production to 50.000 bottles.
Winery Keković strives to preserve tradition, while at the same time following modern trends. Thus, in 2022, it produced the first sparkling wines - red, white and rose, produced from autochthonous Žižak and Kratošija varieties.
Only 10 km from the center of Podgorica, the Keković Winery opened its doors to visitors in 2023, starting wine tourism.
The winery's tasting room provides an opportunity to get acquainted with their wines, and in the next two years, the opening of a new winery and tasting rooms on 1600 m2, equipped according to the most modern standards, is planned.
After the completion of the first phase, the second phase is planned, where there will be an additional part of 2400 m2 that will include accommodation units, a restaurant, with swimming pools, a wellness and spa center.
What makes Winery Keković different?
The winery stands out for its careful selection of sites for planting vineyards, where each grape variety is planted in a place with the most favorable climate and relief in order to obtain grapes of the highest quality. The most modern technology and equipment are used in production, and a special focus is on education and the development of environmental awareness. The first educational meeting called "Wine School" was started by Vinarija Keković, and since March, about 150 wine lovers have gone through it.
Among the environmental initiatives of the winery are:
- Returnable packaging to reduce waste and preserve the environment.
- Composting of waste, such as residues from grape pruning and processing, used for soil enrichment.
- Purification of waste water using separators and bioseptic tanks, which will be part of the new winery project on 1600 m2, planned for 2025.
Also, in the restaurant of the winery, a device is used for water purification and the production of carbonated water in its own packaging, which eliminates additional plastic and glass waste.
In the next two years, they plan to actively present and promote their wines at fairs throughout the region. With production growth, the goal is to successfully position themselves on the regional market by 2026.
